Lightweight adhesive needed in the USA electric vehicle development

As the automotive industry has been striving for environmentally friendly vehicles for several decades, demand for new types of adhesives grows. We were recently contacted by an electric vehicle developer that enquired about a lightweight adhesive for a prototype. This US based manufacturer is working on a prototype of an electric vehicle which aims at being exceptional due to its extremely light weight. Specifications to define the best lightweight adhesive

After having learned that the adhesive must be both lightweight and able to bond lightweight materials we were provided with more specifications. The adhesive should be fast curing in order to prepare for possible fast paced mass production as well as supporting the use of more and more lightweight materials such as composites, honeycomb panels and PUR foam.

Solution: new fast curing chemistry

Not too long ago a chemistry known from fast curing coatings was successfully adopted to formulate adhesives that cure extremely fast and are lightweight. This revolutionary bonding technology relies on polyurea and it has reached North America.

Polyurea adhesives cure in a matter of seconds, are lightweight and require less adhesive for strong bonds than comparable structural adhesives. We shared this information with the US based electric vehicle developer, and they were very positive about the properties. Currently, the polyurea manufacturer and the vehicle developer are in contact in order to define whether polyureas is the right lightweight adhesive for the application.

Construction product manufacturer seeks automated adhesive application equipment

Most of the time we are approached by companies that need an adhesive system. However, sometimes, the adhesive system already exists, but the application method and equipment are yet to be defined. Recently, we were contacted by a construction product manufacturer that is willing to improve their products and enhance production. In order to do so, they require automated adhesive application equipment to replace the currently used manual system.

What is required from the automatic adhesive application equipment

The current construction product of the company has European fire rating B-s1, d0 and it is not suitable for use on high-rise buildings which exceed a certain height. Therefore, the company has designed a new, similar product which has a better fire rating of A2-s1, d0, which allows applications in taller buildings.

The adhesive is a construction epoxy which needs to be applied to the construction product without exceeding the maximum calorific value per square meter. The automated application equipment must also allow for precise application and specific patterns. Most importantly, the purpose of the automatic adhesive application equipment is to increase the production efficiency allowing for a larger number of products made in a short period of time. Looking for compostable stickers and glue for paper bags

Despite our extensive network, it sometimes happens that none of our partners can provide a solution to an enquiry. One such case occurred when a paper bag manufacturer approached us to enquire about 100% compostable stickers and glue.

Electronic component manufacturer needs a metal to metal adhesive in the US

We were recently contacted by a US manufacturer of electronic components who was looking for a metal to metal adhesive. The metal to metal glue was needed to form bonds between aluminum and copper allowing for resistance measurements.

There are many different types of metal glues, most of which are suitable for metal to metal bonding. However, in this case a metal to metal adhesive was needed to bond dissimilar surfaces. The adhesive, additionally, needed to have other special properties.

Metal to metal adhesive specifications

The initial enquiry needed specified by more information on the product and the specific application. The US based manufacturer informed us that they are looking for an easy and efficient to apply adhesive system, preferably a single component glue, which serves the needs of both aluminum and copper. In addition, the adhesive is ideally suitable for manual and automated applications to guarantee versatile use.

As the copper and aluminum surfaces were crucial for measuring resistance, the adhesive was required of a certain level of electrical conductivity. This narrowed down the possible adhesive suppliers.

Finding a copper to aluminum adhesive supplier

In order to connect the American component manufacturer with the most suitable adhesive supplier, we asked around within our network. Eventually, we concluded that two of the potential suppliers could offer a metal to metal adhesive solution that would meet the specified needs of the product.

The test results are currently being reviewed and an order is expected to be placed.

A contractor seeks a sealant for airport project in Germany

A contractor who specializes in concrete and asphalt surfaces recently contacted us as they were looking for a sealant for a project at an airport in Germany. The contractor was responsible for concrete and asphalt on docks, loading and gate areas as well as taxiways, ramps and runway construction including take off and touch down zone. For this purpose, they needed a sealant that is suitable for joints between asphalt and concrete. The sealant supplier suggested MS polymer sealants, which are extremely durable but remain flexible allowing for movement without cracking. Also known for resistance to fuels, MS polymer sealants are environmentally friendly, as they do not contain any isocyanates, solvents or silicone.

Product delivery and technical support

The contractor and sealant exchanged project and product data and agreed on the suitability of the suggested sealants. An order was placed and the airport sealants were delivered to Germany where they were applied to the expansion joints by the contractor. The sealant supplier provided technical support to ensure no mistakes were made during application.
